Two weeks ago we got a visit from Jennifer Mulreany from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. They are currently featuring the PS22 Chorus segment on the NBC website (which you can see above), and also a really beautiful write up from Summer Suleiman, an intern from NBC who joined Miss Mulreany on her visit to PS22. (You can also see it in the screencap below.) Thanks to both Jen and Summer for the beautiful piece they put together, and for introducing a brand new audience to our amazing kids and their seemingly endless bounty of accomplishments!

Congratulations for the great job with this kids! They make me cry everytime I hear them singing!
Let them know that they have a Big fan in Brazil!
Hugs for all those WONDERFUL kids!
HAHA!!! you're a handful-- nothing like the honesty of youth! Another great segment. I loved hearing some different songs in the piece.
Another fantastic segment about a fantastic group!
It's amazing how much these kids have changed over the course of the year. I almost didn't recognize Allie in the segment..she looks like a teenager! Mr. B. must be putting Miracle Grow in their Fruit Loops every morning :)
Mr. B... you and your choir are so inspiring. Caught them first singing Landslide then saw Viva La Vida. Tears! I had to blog about you. You have fans all the way in the Philippines : ) Please keep doing this... I know how music can save a kid's life!
I'm from spain, it's really beautiful.
Congratulations!!!!
I would love to hear what they have taught YOU! LOL...I think u hold the key- acting free as they do.. I know I was always attracted more to teachers who opened up and weren't afraid to share their thoughts.. I only had a few that talked to students as students and took an interest in them.
Hi there!
Perhaps you've heard this before, but you are an incredible inspiration. :) I'm a 3rd grade teacher in Washington State and I see what a powerful motivator music is to them every day in class (we sing our way through math).
I know it's not much, but we just awarded your site the One Lovely Blog award! http://mshoughtonsclass.wordpress.com/2009/06/25/one-lovely-blog-award/
I have no clue how you manage to juggle everything you do, then have time left over to blog, but please keep it up -- your students keep me going on the days when I feel short on hope, and they energize me on the days when I know my students can achieve greatness!
Cheers,
Shannon (Ms. Houghton)
THESE CHILDREN ARE BEAUTIFUL & MOVE ME TO TEARS! CONGRTS!!! ON A JOB WELL DONE YOU ALL INSPIRE ME! GOD BLESS & KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!! brooklynjewel :)
It's great that these kids are encouraged to express themselves through music and are being recognized for their efforts. I'm sure it will have a profound effect on their lives.
I think you guys are wonderful!!! I get goosebumps everytime I hear you sing! I think it is amazing to see so many kids enjoying themselves and enjoying the wide range of music they sing. This may sound cheesy, but I would love to hear PS22 sing Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." With the talent in the group I think they would totally blow everyone away with this song:):)
Love you Mr. B! And the kids. After seeing your kids on NBC, then your blog, I made it to YouTube and got to see my favorite song, "Let There Be Peace On Earth" and I was just bawling! Bawling because they sang so beautifully, and because I know what a huge impact you are making on their lives. I would consider my kids to be truly blessed if they had a teacher like you. God bless you and keep up the phenomenal work you do!
You are doing an amazing job with the children. Being a children's pastor I understand the pressures children deal with in today's society. This is the perfect outlet and a way to venture into their God given skills. GREAT job!
hey mr.b wats up
Dear Mr. B,
Your kids made me smile smile smile!
I have been teaching for 10 years plus, and your story helps me remember why I wanted to teach in the first place. Your work is inspiring, innovative and powerful. Listening to the kids talk about meeting Tori Amos was great! (Especially Jordan).
I noticed that once these kids graduate and head to middle school, that music is not likely to be part of the curriculum.
How are these kids supported (musically, emotionally) without their passion??
All the best!
Emily
an important question that demands an answer....
It is so important! I ought to have mentioned that I am a visual art teacher who happens to have a passion for singing (I sang acappella in college and beyond). I think you ought to call your new pal the secretary of education and see how Staten Island kids can have music in middle school! Seriously.....do kids come visit you with post-chorus-traumatic-stress-disorder once they hit grade 6?
Well - they have this time with you and I am sure they will have memories to hold on to for a long time. Keep doing what you are doing! : )
And maybe you can bring your kids to VT and show our HS chorus how to get their groove thang on!!!
Best!
Emily
we love road trips.... and yes, there have been definitive cases of post-traumatic stress disorder! ;
Who had the case of ptsd-- you or the kids-- or both ;)
lol! and what about you??? don't exclude yourself from this equation!
Very true... guess I busted myself on that one! I guess getting hooked on talented kids is a hazard of the profession--
